Going to the hospital can kill you.
Every year nearly two million hospital-acquired infections claim roughly 100,000 lives.
Heart attacks are misdiagnosed 47 percent of the time. Why are women the common victims?
Did you know that hospital death rates increase up to 34% in July?
Why do these things happen? What can you do about them? How can you be safe?

This book is not about bashing doctors, nurses, hospitals, or the health care industry. Although hospital safety statistics are alarming, hospitals do more to help than they do to harm. The majority of doctors and nurses are amazingly dedicated people who surrender their lives to do exhausting work to help others in need. Most patients leave the hospital with their problems solved, ready to take on the world as functioning individuals. However, the health care system is fragmented, and many patients are compromised.

A visit to a hospital is inevitable, either as a patient, a friend, loved one, or visitor. Whatever your role, this puts you in a position of accountability. A hospital stay is no occasion to be a weak voice in the background. Use this book not only as a guide but as a personal challenge to change your frame of reference to allow you to become your own advocate or the advocate of a friend or loved one in need. If you choose to accept the challenge, this book,  Speak Up and Stay Alive, will give you the tools you need to become a safe and intelligent healthcare consumer.

Six patient gowns hanging on a wall with one empty space. One study of Medicare patients found that 1 in 7 died or were harmed by their hospital care.

About the author and speaker - Patricia J. Rullo

Pat is known nationally as a speaker and coach in the insurance and banking industry and has served on the advisory boards of New York Life Insurance Company and Transamerica Life Insurance Company. She is recognized through Consulting Psychologists Press as a certified administrator and interpreter of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, an assessment instrument that provides in-depth insights into personality type and behavior. She is the author of numerous business magazine articles as well as the books - Worksite Marketing, A Promise to Deliver and Succeed With Style, and is the founder of the charity Sewport Our Troops and the charitable fundraising company, A Case for a Cause.

In 2008, while overseeing her insurance company Millennium Benefits Group, Pat's 78 year old mother took an accidental fall while at work over an unresolved building code violation that resulted in a crushed shoulder. During the shoulder repair operation she suffered a severe heart attack that went unrecognized by the entire hospital staff for nearly 9 hours.

This resulted in four months of intensive care, the use of every means of life support available, and a lengthy stay at a rehabilitation center where the substandard quality of care nearly ended her life. Throughout this nightmare, Pat was an activist—watching, listening, learning and speaking up on behalf of her mother. This experience unveiled the shocking truth about hospital care today. Here, Pat shares her findings in an effort to spare innocent patients from the perils that threaten their lives.

The book, Speak Up and Stay Alive, a patient advocate hospital survival guide, is the result of several years of research in addition to real life hospital horror. Pat speaks nationally on the subject, educating groups, clubs and organizations on the importance of having an advocate at all times during a hospital stay, what dangers to look for and how to survive them. When she's not writing, speaking or coaching business professionals, Pat also makes time for a daily river kayak at her summer home in Ohio and desert tai chi at her winter home in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona.

A patient's back marked with an X. U.S. surgeons operate on the wrong person or body part as often as 40 times a week.

PAT'S UPDATE: Recently my mom was in the hospital to have a sternal wire removed from her chest. Moments prior to her surgery a young intern approached her bed holding a bag of medication.

As he attempted to hang the bag of fluid on her IV pole, she asked what it was for and he answered, "It's just something for your back surgery." She replied, "But I'm not having back surgery!" His comeback? "Oh yes you are - it's written on the board."

Another statistic? Thankfully she was awake and cognizant of her situation. THE LESSON: Be prepared - read the book - bring it with you to the hospital - Speak Up. Let everyone know you are an informed and empowered patient.
